WHS Boys Basketball Preview

By: Andrew Evans

The boys basketball season is right around the corner and excitement is in the air. After last season’s unfulfilling ending, the up and coming athletes are looking for redemption. These players include: Tanner Bohm, Viktor Kaiser, Landon Schmidt, and Noah Baldwin.

Windsor’s coach Dustin Duncan will be looking for leadership from these players, and can’t wait to see what they will do this season. With tryouts taking place within the last couple of weeks though, the teams lineup is not set in stone. With football going to the playoffs not all the player have been able to tryout. Coach Dustin Duncan talked about the situation saying,
“I’m excited, it’s always exciting to start the year. We have three kids coming back with a lot of experience, and some of the other kids have been in the gym a lot. We held tryouts with the non-football kids last week, and we have the football kids starting (Nov. 17) with tryouts over the next few days, but we haven’t had everyone out there yet. It’s always a good thing, it means football did well. I think it’s good for them to compete in other sports and go deep in playoffs so they know what the atmosphere is like.”

It’s not just Windsor’s coach though that is eagerly waiting for the season. Junior point guard Noah Baldwin is too. When asked what the teams expectations were, and what they are doing to make them successful he answered saying, “the overall goal is to win a state championship. If we do that nothing else matters. To do this though everybody has to buy into the program and sell out every game and practice.”

The season looks bright for this young team, so buckle in and be prepared for a season full of success.

Community Recreation Center Expansion to Begin

The decision has been made, and Windsor citizens are in for some pleasant change in the coming years. The expansion of the current rec center will add things such as a leisure pool, lap lanes, water slide, auxiliary gym, track, aerobics and wellness studios, expanded locker rooms, a supervised child area, a classroom/party room and additional parking.

Dave Hammel from Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture is the company that will handle the design and construction documents for the expansion. Dave said, “the real work begins now, and the real fun actually begins now,” Hammel told the board during last week’s town board meeting. “We’re very excited, and we know the town is very excited to get started. Let’s get this thing going and get it open as soon as possible.”  Not only does Dave intend to build enthralling new additions, but he is making it energy efficient which will reduce the cost for the town.

This expansion will not come at no cost though. The expansion will be funded through a .75 percent increase to Windsor's sales tax rate. Most of the increase (.55 of one percent) will go toward repaying debt, while the remaining .2 of one percent will be set aside for operations and maintenance of the rec center. The increase will add 15 cents to a $20 purchase. Windsor native Dan Evans spoke on the expansion saying, “this new and improved rec center will be awesome for the community. It will benefit everyone in the town giving them extended workout and leisure opportunities.”

Construction is scheduled to begin in July and hopefully be completed in time to open the facility in August 2016.

Special
In this picture it shows the 2014-2015 Windsor boys basketball team. This picture was taken last summer when the team traveled to San Diego for a team camp. During this camp the team improved their skill set and fundamentals. Not only did the team get to play Basketball though they spent their free time hanging out on the beach and even making a trip to Atlantis.
